Are the shape and size of abdominal muscles born?

  If you are a novice or rarely come into contact with fitness news, you may think, "What is this problem?"

  However, many people in the fitness circle believe that abdominal muscles are not too big.   Even if you are more extreme, you will say:

  "The size and shape of abdominal muscles are determined by genes, and no matter what, you can't change it."

  "Only by controlling diet and reducing body fat, the six-pack muscles will appear, and it has nothing to do with exercise."

 (Although the fitness industry has different evaluations of abdominal muscles, abdominal muscles are indeed the goal that many people pursue)

  However, here On the side, I want to share with you a report from PLoS (Science Public Book) in 2010:

This report points out that "the volume of the rectus abdominal muscle of tennis players is 58% larger than that of ordinary people", which is quite obvious.

What is more fun is that there is a significant difference in the size of the abdominal muscles on both sides of tennis players. "The habitual side is 34% larger than that of ordinary people, and the non-usual side is 82% larger than that of ordinary people!! This shows that our abdominal muscles have the potential to increase an additional 80% volume!

  (The above is the magnetic resonance image of the rectus abdominal muscle of tennis players. Compared with the small side, the large side not only has a larger size, but also has a slightly different shape. )

This report can give us two inspirations:

  1. Abdominal muscles can indeed grow through exercise, and the growth space may exceed 80% of the original volume.

  The sentence "Abdominal muscles are trained in the kitchen" may only answer half of the answer. If you are pursuing a more three-dimensional rather than a line-only abdominal muscles, then exercise may be necessary.

  2. The phenomenon of local muscle hypertrophy does exist. The volume of rectus muscles on the left and right sides of tennis players is as much as 36%.

  If you have heard a senior tell you that abdominal muscles are not trained, this news may rekindle your fighting spirit to exercise your abdominal muscles

  Although the change in shape is not something we can control, the size and thickness can be changed (unless you think 80% of the volume is nothing) Perhaps it is just that little thickness, and your six packs will float on the table.

  Some fitness predecessors may sneer at the abdominal muscles. Although I am not very keen on training abdominal muscles,

  But I think every fast muscle on my body has something to appreciate

  Last remind everyone that it is my personal preference to exercise abdominal muscles, but in addition to exercising abdominal muscles, don’t forget to exercise the muscles behind them and occasionally stretch them to avoid muscle imbalance.
